LEAP Academy

LEAP Academy (Learning recovery, Enrichment, Athletics, Program) is a Natomas Unified School District program made possible with state funding from the Expanded Learning Opportunities program (ELO-P) and the After School Education and Safety (ASES) program. This funding allows for districts to provide after-school and intersession programs at schools for specific scholar populations.
Program providers offer extended support in reading, writing, math, science, and healthy habits, including nutrition and organized fitness.

NUSD’s Literacy Learning Lab is a dynamic summer program designed to help students strengthen their reading skills and build confidence as learners. The program provides additional time and focused attention for students to develop essential literacy skills in a welcoming environment where children feel encouraged and successful.
Each day includes a dedicated literacy learning block based on the Science of Reading, focused on key reading skills such as understanding sounds in words, reading with accuracy, and making sense of text. Families can feel confident knowing their child is receiving high-quality literacy instruction aligned to their learning needs.
In addition to the literacy focus, students also participate in enrichment activities throughout the day. These experiences offer opportunities for creativity, collaboration, and exploration, helping balance focused learning with fun and engagement.
By blending strong literacy instruction with meaningful enrichment, the Literacy Learning Lab supports both academic growth and a positive, joyful experience that helps students feel excited about learning.

Where Scholars Build Literacy, Leadership, and Voice
Freedom Schools at NUSD is more than a Summer expanded learning program; it is a high-energy, culturally grounded experience where scholars grow as strong readers, confident leaders, and empowered young people who understand their voice and their value. Led by Roberts Family Development Center, the program creates a safe, affirming, and joy-filled learning community where every scholar is seen, supported, and challenged to rise.
Grounded in the nationally recognized Children’s Defense Fund, Freedom Schools® model is aligned with RFDC’s commitment to youth development, family partnership, and community impact. Freedom Schools is designed not only to support academic success but to nurture identity, purpose, and leadership.
At the heart of Freedom Schools is a dynamic literacy approach that brings reading to life. Scholars engage daily with high-quality, culturally relevant books and texts that reflect diverse identities and lived experiences.
Students must be currently enrolled in grades TK-5 at an NUSD school to apply for summer school programs.
